Sketch for "Hope", The Willow Gallery, Oswestry - John Swogger, 2010

I’m taking part in the Christmas Art Advent Calendar at The Willow Gallery in Oswestry. A selection of local artists, artisans and craftworkers have been chosen to contribute to the six-foot high calendar, which looks right out through the main windows of the Willow Gallery out onto Willow Street. Each of the advent “doors” hides either a 15cm square flat panel or a 15cm square box. I was one of the artists asked to contribute a box.

My box is revealed on December 18th, so I won’t put a photograph of the work up here until after the 18th –  on the left here is an image of my preliminary sketch.

I had great fun putting it the artwork together, though. The box contains one of my small 3-D works – similar to the ones I’ve shown in various Inside Out exhibitions – that mixes construction with collage. There’s a bit of gold leaf to catch the light, and a message on the theme of “hope”. I hope this develops into a proper tradition for Oswestry!

There’s a new piece of artwork being revealed every day, so brighten up your dull winter shopping days and stop by the Willow Gallery as often as you can through December for a look.
