Sam - Something Different About Her, 2010
Last week, Kirsti and I got together and started talking seriously about a follow-up to Something Different About Dad. We’ve been throwing ideas around for about six months or so, ever since SDAD was finished. Now, however, we talked it through seriously.
So we penned in a date last week and then sat down in the studio and spent a whole afternoon in front of a big flip-chart, scrawling stuff down. I think it was always clear to us that we would like to do something about girls and AS, but we didn’t know exactly what.
I think we’re now moving in the direction of a story focused on a teenage girl with AS, and trying to look at ways in which girls’ experience of AS differs from boys. We’re also using the story to try and understand why AS among girls can remain hidden, and why referral of girls with AS to services and professionals is often rare. Odd, considering the high-profile nature of individuals such as Temple Grandin.
We’re still feeling our way with this, but I’m excited at the prospect of another book. Keep you posted.
