Helen!/At last - Digital, 2010
Slowly but surely, images and ideas are beginning to come in for our collaborative art project “The Way”. One of the photographers in our group, Geoff Armitage, has put some pix up on Flickr as part of The Way set – real photos, not just my crappy reference snaps.
I’ve been continuing to work around with comic stuff – mostly working with ideas that came out of our Saturday Crit Session last week about mixing text and image, and the way in which a “third dimension” is invoked that’s neither purely about the text nor purely about the image, but is about the union of the two.
Obviously this is what comics are about – but there’s more to it than that: the way that sometimes text and image can be combined not simply to become part of a narrative unit, but to become more than the sum of the individual parts. Like Robert Indiana’s “Love” , or Roy Lichtenstein’s “Whaam!” – text, form and image combine to create something more than text+form/image. My own “Helen” and “Annie” are part of me working through that continuum, and ultimately towards something for “The Way”.
