And In That Moment/Annie - Digital, 2010
Well, enough fooling around – time to get back to work. After the fun of the VIA conference and getting The Way underway (ho, ho), it’s time to get back to some serious comic work. I’ve got three comic projects on the horizon. The first is the sequel to Something Different About Dad (available now for pre-order on amazon.co.uk and amazon.com!). Kirsti’s in the middle of pulling ideas together for a sequel – well, a second book, shall we say – and so I need to get down to working through all the stuff I’ve learned over the past year.
Overall, I was very pleased with how the artwork for the book turned out. I was particularly pleased that the characterisation remained so consistent throughout the panels, and I’d like to do more with that for the second book. I’m also going to slightly adjust the style a little, so that it’s a little less, well, “cartoon-y” (if that’s not bordering on a contradiction). One of my current favourite comic artists is Barnaby Ward/Somefield, whose work I first discovered through a Floating World Comics cover featuring Kitty Pryde. I really like his open, sketchy style, and the way he has with long, loose-limbed female figures. I’ll try moving in a slightly Barnaby Ward-esque direction and see what happens. I’m particularly interested in mixing slightly different styles to depict different people’s points of view/voices within the narrative.
Anyway, that’s the first thing to get working on over the next month or so before Xmas. Hopefully I’ll have some new images for preview soon. In the meantime, I’m still playing around with comics and their potential as an art format. The attached pic is from a series of trial single panel works I’ve been playing around with. They’re big – well, their vector works, so that can be infinitely huge, I suppose. I’ll be getting a couple of big canvases made up soon – and a couple of prints once I’ve finalised the series. At the moment I’m just playing around with ideas.
