Something New
Been thinking my way through all the discussion at the weekend crit session at the studio. I enjoyed it immensely – so much to process – so many comments on both my own work and on other people’s work that sparked new ideas and new directions. It’s funny, isn’t it – just when you think you know where you’re going and how, something that someone says pushes you off in another direction entirely. It just goes to show that learning is not only an ongoing, but an unexpected process. You can never be entirely sure where the next bit of learning is going to come from.
I suppose this is why it’s important to continue to stay connected – both with other artists and the world beyond. A successful mind is a connected mind, I read somewhere on the internet recently. It’s true – no one is entirely original: we all borrow from the trajectories and paths of others. Like stellar bodies, our orbits are constantly affected by the gravity and direction of others. We borrow a little of their momentum and return the favour.
