Orrak island – early morning.

Back now from six weeks’ excavation on Palau. It was a great island and great season. A bit of diving, a bit of snorkelling, a bit of yomping around islands with some great company, some memorable late-night parties – and yes, some great archaeology thrown in for good measure.

Now I’ve got about four months’ post-excavation work to do on all the Palau material – not least pullingĀ Palau: An Archaeological Field Journal into shape. As I suspected, things got too busy during the season itself to do much more than sketch and make notes – but I did come back with almost three notebooks full of drawings full of material, and have started work organising it all into something coherent. My aim is to have a substantial portion of it complete by the time Comics Forum rolls around in November – complete enough to present some of the experience of doing the comic as part of a paper on archaeology and comics. I’ve also got a bundle of finds illustrations to ink in, plus a series of cutaway reconstructions on our site on the island of Orrak to finish for the Bureau of Arts and Culture.

Lots of stuff to get through – so this won’t be the last I post about Palau.

Titanic Cutaway (final)

Final view of the Titanic cutaway. I actually finished this on Saturday, but wanted to make sure the art director was happy with it before I posted it. She is – and so here it is.

The final illustration covers two pages, and has a small inset illustration up in the top right hand corner showing how the ship sank.

I’m very pleased with the way it turned out – and had great fun both researching and drawing it. It’s going to be published on the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic in April next year.

Titanic Cutaway (4)

Upper decks and the fore rigging today. Really like the way it’s all coming together.

Tomorrow I’ll do the funnels, the lifeboats, vents and stacks on the upper deck, and the aft rigging and the marconi antenna. I’ll also make a start on some of the interior cutaways – probably do the boilers or the interior framing and decks.

Have to say, very pleased with the way it looks so far – enjoyed doing this drawing very much.

Titanic Cutaway (3)

Third stage of my cutaway illustration of the Titanic for Cobblestone Publishing. Painted the hull and the first part of the Bridge Deck today.

Tomorrow I’ll tackle the upper decks – Boat Deck, Promenade Deck, etc. – plus the funnels, rudder, propellors, masts, etc. Then I’ll finish the interior on Thursday and integrate it into the background with the inset illustration on Friday.

Titanic cutaway - detailed rough

A more detailed rough draft with the background added in and the placement of the inset and the main drawing of the ship corrected. Next I’ll start modelling and painting the hull and the hull-cutaways and then the upper decks.

Particularly enjoyed painting the ice in the foreground – it’s there to give just a little bit of a narrative hint to the illustration.

Titanic Cutaway - layout rough

Just started work on a double-page cutaway of the Titanic for Cobblestone Publishing. Thought I might post drafts in their various stages for anyone who was interested.

Here’s the double-page spread and my pencil rough to get the layout right. Just sent this back to Deb at Cobblestone to get her to okay it, and then I’ll start work on it properly.
